Sociology 1010, completed with a minimum grade of 60%, will qualify a student for admission into any 2000-level Sociology or Sociology\/Anthropology course.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">B. Anthropology 1050, completed with a minimum grade of 60%, will qualify a student for admission into any 2000-level Anthropology or Sociology\/Anthropology course.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">C. All students must complete Anthropology 1050 and Sociology 1010, with a combined average of 60%, and at least one Anthropology, Sociology, or Sociology\/Anthropology course at the 2000-level in order to enrol in any Anthropology, Sociology, or Sociology\/Anthropology course at the 3000-level. Normally, students take 2000 level courses before proceeding to higher levels.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">D. Students registering for their first 4000-level course are required to have completed at least two 3000-level courses.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">E. Courses designated as Sociology\/Anthropology (S\/AN) are designed for both sociology and anthropology students and are appropriate for both majors.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">NOTE: Introductory courses do not count as electives within any of the programs offered by the Sociology and Anthropology Department.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\"><strong lang=\"en-CA\" xml:lang=\"en-CA\">DEPARTMENT PROGRAMS\r\n<\/strong>The following are the departmental requirements for each program:<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\"><strong lang=\"en-CA\" xml:lang=\"en-CA\">REQUIREMENTS FOR A MAJOR IN SOCIOLOGY\r\n<\/strong><strong>NOTE: As per Academic Regulation #1 h), all undergraduate degree programs require successful completion of IKE-1040, one of UPEI-1010, 1020 or 1030, and a Writing Intensive Course.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">a. The course involves supervised reading and research on specific topics. The student is required to write a substantial Honours essay or research report, which will be assessed by a three-member committee consisting of the supervisor, one additional member of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and a member from another Department.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">Admission Requirements\r\nStudents intending to join the program must apply to the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Applicants must be registered in, or have completed, the combined Sociology\/Anthropology major program. Applications are normally submitted during the sixth semester. To be eligible to apply for admission to the program, students must have an average of 70% in all prior courses and an average of 75% in all previous Sociology and Anthropology courses taken. To continue in the Honours program, students must maintain an overall average of 70% in all courses and an average of 75% in Sociology and Anthropology courses.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">Admission to the program is competitive, and subject to the availability of a full-time faculty supervisor in the student\u2019s chosen thesis area.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\"><strong>REQUIREMENTS FOR HONOURS IN SOCIOLOGY\/ANTHROPOLOGY\r\n<\/strong><strong>NOTE: As per Academic Regulation #1 h), all undergraduate degree programs require successful completion of IKE-1040, one of UPEI-1010, 1020 or 1030, and a Writing Intensive Course.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">For an Honours in Sociology\/Anthropology, which is a combined Honours in Sociology and Anthropology, the student will take fifty-seven semester hours of courses as listed below:<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\">a. Twenty-one semester hours of required courses as follows:\r\n-Sociology 3010 (Sociological Theory I), Sociology 3020 (Sociological Theory II), Sociology 3310 (Methodology and Research I), and Sociology 3320 (Methodology and Research II).\r\n-Anthropology 3210 (Field Methods), Anthropology 3320 (Knowledge and Culture), and Anthropology 3610 (Anthropological Theory).\r\nc. Research<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<h1 class=\"import-Normal no-indent\"><strong lang=\"en-CA\" xml:lang=\"en-CA\">SOCIOLOGY COURSES<\/strong><\/h1>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">1010 INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY\r\nThis course introduces many of the main concepts within the field of sociology such as culture, socialization, norms, social roles, values, deviance, and social structure. In addition, this course utilizes the basic concepts and perspectives in sociology to examine critically and to interpret the kinds of interaction experienced in social institutions such as the economy, the polity, the family, education, and religion.\r\nPREREQUISITE: None\r\nThree hours a week<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\"><strong lang=\"en-CA\" xml:lang=\"en-CA\">NOTE:<\/strong> All 2000-level Sociology courses have Sociology 1010 as a prerequisite.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">2010 DEVIANCE AND CONTROL\r\nAn objective analysis of different sociological approaches to the meaning of deviance and to the nature of social control. The causes and consequences of social deviance are critically examined utilizing the following theories: social disorganization, functionalism, anomie and opportunity, value-conflict, interactionism, labelling, and critical conflict. Ideologies associated with each approach are compared. Substantive areas include: crime and delinquency, suicide, drug use, as well as various forms of sexual, occupational, and institutional deviance.\r\nPREREQUISITE: Sociology 1010\r\nThree hours a week<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">2020 CRIMINOLOGY\r\nThis course examines the historical and contemporary structure and functions of the Canadian criminal justice system, including legislation, policing, courts, corrections, and parole. Various forms of law breaking are studied such as youth offences, conventional street crime, family violence, white collar and corporate crime, and organized and political crime. How do media shape communication and what kinds of utterances belong to which media? This course offers a critical perspective on different forms of media produced, distributed, and consumed in a variety of contexts and locales. We will also consider how media are shaped by\u2014but also constitutive of\u2014the physical and virtual infrastructures, across human and non-human environments.
