Its object is to recreate the past from the evidence left to us, and to try to explain how and why human beings spoke, acted, and thought as they did in the past. Although history must always deal with the \u201cfacts\u201d of societies, it is even more concerned with explaining and illuminating them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">The program is centred broadly on the history of \u201cAtlantic Civilization\u201d\u2014the historical development of Europe and the Americas. The courses aim to provide both a broad exposure to the history of the Atlantic World, and more specialized work in the history of various regions and countries. The Department also offers courses in the practice and the craft of history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"no-indent\"><span class=\"import-Normal no-indent tight\"><strong lang=\"en-CA\" xml:lang=\"en-CA\">AREA Studies\n<\/span><span class=\"import-Normal no-indent tight\">4920 Directed Studies\n<\/span><span class=\"import-Normal no-indent tight\">4970 Honours Tutorial in Historiography\n<\/span><span class=\"import-Normal no-indent tight\">4980 Honours Graduating Essay<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">Normally, students who intend to major in History will choose History 1010\/1020 as their introduction to history. These courses include an important tutorial component emphasizing introductory skills and methods of history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">2000-level courses provide introductions to the histories of civilizations, regions, and countries, especially in the areas listed above. They are intended to build upon the skills acquired in first year History courses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">3000-level courses provide more specialized studies in a number of areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">4000-level courses are usually seminars emphasizing discussion and research in more specialized areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">While providing courses for students in all faculties, schools, and departments, the Department also provides a minor, major, and honours program for those who have a special interest in the study of history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\"><strong lang=\"en-CA\" xml:lang=\"en-CA\">MAJOR PROGRAM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">To register as a major in History, a student must complete History 1010\/1020 and six semester hours (2 courses) at the 2000 level. Students are urged to take History 2010\/2020 in the first or second year to satisfy the second requirement. Students may take additional 2000-level courses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-MediumList1-Accent61 no-indent\">History 1010\/1020, 2010\/2020, 2110, and 3120 are compulsory for students in the major program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-MediumList1-Accent61 no-indent\">History 1010\/1020, 2010\/2020, and 2110 should be completed by the end of the fourth semester.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-MediumList1-Accent61 no-indent\">History 3120 should be completed no later than the end of the sixth semester.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">A major program is complete when a student has successfully completed a minimum of 42 hours of credit in History (14 courses) of which a minimum of 9 hours (3 courses) must be at the 3000 level, and 9 hours (3 courses) must be at the 4000 level. Majors must complete courses totalling 6 semester hours of credit at the 2000-4000 levels in one of the following areas of study: Europe, Britain, the USA, and Global.&nbsp; <strong lang=\"en-CA\">(<b><span>NOTE: As per Academic Regulation #1 h), all undergraduate degree programs require successful completion of IKE-1040, one of UPEI-1010, 1020 or 1030, and a Writing Intensive Course.)&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/span><\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\"><strong lang=\"en-CA\" xml:lang=\"en-CA\">HONOURS PROGRAM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">To be admitted to the Honours program, the student must submit a letter of application to the Honours Coordinator. Applicants must be registered in, or have completed, the major program. Applications are normally submitted during the fourth or fifth semester. Decisions on admission are made by the department acting as a committee of the whole. Admissions decisions will be made on the basis of demonstrated and potential ability to carry out independent research and sustained historical analysis. Meeting the minimum entry requirements does not guarantee admission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-MediumList1-Accent61 no-indent\">Applicants normally must have a CGPA of 3.0 in all previous University courses. Normally, the Department expects an average of at least 80% in all previous history courses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-MediumList1-Accent61 no-indent\">In addition to the courses required for the major, honours students are required to complete History 4970 and 4980.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-MediumList1-Accent61 no-indent\">Each honours student must prepare a graduating honours essay under the direction of a supervisor. This essay will be evaluated by a three-person committee, two members from within the Department and one member of which will be from outside the Department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-MediumList1-Accent61 no-indent\">The candidate must take a final oral examination on the essay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-MediumList1-Accent61 no-indent\">Students intending to enter graduate programs should be aware that many such programs require a reading knowledge of a second language. Undergraduate courses in a second language are a useful preparation for graduate work in history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"no-indent\"><span class=\"import-Normal no-indent tight\">An Honours program is complete when the student completes:\n<\/span><span class=\"import-Normal no-indent tight\">1. a total of 120 semester hours of course credits with a mini- mum overall average of 75%;\n<\/span><span class=\"import-Normal no-indent tight\">2. a total of 48 semester hours of course credits in History (6 semester hours in addition to the minimum required for the major), with a minimum average of 75%.&nbsp; <strong lang=\"en-CA\">(<b><span>NOTE: As per Academic Regulation #1 h), all undergraduate degree programs require successful completion of IKE-1040, one of UPEI-1010, 1020 or 1030, and a Writing Intensive Course.)&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/span><\/b><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\"><strong lang=\"en-CA\" xml:lang=\"en-CA\">CREDITS FOR CROSS-LISTED COURSES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">The Department accepts as part of its major or honours program a maximum of 12 hours (4 courses) of courses cross-credited to History from related disciplines. Of such courses, students can apply 6 hours (2 courses) taken at the 1000 or 2000 levels and 6 hours (2 courses) at the 3000 or 4000 levels. Students must have the prior approval of the Chair of History if credit is to be granted. The courses from related disciplines which may be approved for credit are the following:<\/p>\n<p class=\"no-indent\"><span class=\"import-Normal tight\">Asian Studies 2010 - Introduction to West Asia\n<\/span><span class=\"import-Normal tight\">Asian Studies 2020 - Introduction to East Asia\n<\/span><span class=\"import-Normal tight\">Economics 3110\/3120 - History of Economic Thought\n<\/span><span class=\"import-Normal tight\">English 3780 - The Medieval Book\n<\/span><span class=\"import-Normal tight\">Fine Arts History - 1010\/1020 Art History\n<\/span><span class=\"import-Normal tight\">Religious Studies 3310\/3320 - History of Christianity<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\"><strong lang=\"en-CA\" xml:lang=\"en-CA\">MINOR PROGRAM<\/strong><strong lang=\"en-CA\" xml:lang=\"en-CA\">S<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\"><strong lang=\"en-CA\" xml:lang=\"en-CA\">HISTORY MINOR<\/strong><strong lang=\"en-CA\" xml:lang=\"en-CA\">\n<\/strong>To complete a minor in History, the student must complete History 1010\/1020 and five other history courses (15 semester hours), including<\/p>\n<p class=\"no-indent\">one Canadian history,\none continental European history,\none course each out of two of the following three fields: British history, USA history, and Global history,\none other history course.<span class=\"import-MediumList1-Accent61 tight\">\n<\/span><span class=\"import-Normal tight\">At least two of the student\u2019s courses must be at the 3000 level or above.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\"><strong lang=\"en-CA\" xml:lang=\"en-CA\">MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE STUDIES MINOR<\/strong><strong lang=\"en-CA\" xml:lang=\"en-CA\">\n<\/strong>A minor in Medieval and Renaissance Studies will be recognized when a student has completed 21 semester hours in Medieval and Renaissance courses, including History 2010 and six other courses from at least three different departments. At least one course must be at the 4000 level.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">The following courses would all be eligible to be counted towards the minor. Directed Studies courses are usually restricted to qualified Third and Fourth Year students in any discipline. The program of study in the course must be approved by the Instructor, the Chair, and the Dean of the Faculty prior to registration.<\/p>\n\n<h1 class=\"import-Normal no-indent\"><strong lang=\"en-CA\" xml:lang=\"en-CA\">HISTORY COURSES<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">1010 CANADIAN HISTORY\u2014PRE-CONFEDERATION\nThis course surveys topics of historical importance in Canadian history up to and including the attainment of Confederation. The emphasis is on the interaction between political events and change in the economy and society. Tutorials examine various historical interpretations of the Canadian experience.\nLecture: Two hours a week\nTutorial: One hour a week<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">1020 CANADIAN HISTORY\u2014POST-CONFEDERATION\nThis course surveys topics of historical importance in Canadian history in the Post-Confederation period. These techniques include; the careful analysis of primary sources; an appreciation that there are different historical interpretations of the same subject; an understanding of how the subject under investigation changes over time. Instead of regular lectures, in each class students work through a series of carefully selected readings which forms the basis for interactive discussions. From the devastating outbreaks of the Black Death in medieval Europe, to the contemporary phenomenon of Ebo<\/span>la, the course focuses on the ways in which major outbreaks of infectious disease have shaped societies. The course considers the medical, social, economic, and political consequences of epidemics and pandemics. The course explores how various forms of plague were understood when they happened, and how our views of them have changed over time. The anxieties and fears generated by these changes will constitute the focus of this course. The Malleus is a crucial text, for it helped spread the \u201celaborated theory of witchcraft\u201d which argued that witches made a formal alliance with the devil to work maleficent magic. Yet for all of its influence on the witch hunts of the sixteenth and seventeenth century, the Malleus is a very poorly argued book, full of contradictions. history. These courses include an important tutorial component emphasizing introductory skills and methods of history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">2000-level courses provide introductions to the histories of civilizations, regions, and countries, especially in the areas listed above. They are intended to build upon the skills acquired in first year History courses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">3000-level courses provide more specialized studies in a number of areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">4000-level courses are usually seminars emphasizing discussion and research in more specialized areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">While providing courses for students in all faculties, schools, and departments, the Department also provides a minor, major, and honours program for those who have a special interest in the study of history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\"><strong lang=\"en-CA\" xml:lang=\"en-CA\">MAJOR PROGRAM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">To register as a major in History, a student must complete History 1010\/1020 and six semester hours (2 courses) at the 2000 level. Students are urged to take History 2010\/2020 in the first or second year to satisfy the second requirement. Students may take additional 2000-level courses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-MediumList1-Accent61 no-indent\">History 1010\/1020, 2010\/2020, 2110, and 3120 are compulsory for students in the major program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-MediumList1-Accent61 no-indent\">History 1010\/1020, 2010\/2020, and 2110 should be completed by the end of the fourth semester.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-MediumList1-Accent61 no-indent\">History 3120 should be completed no later than the end of the sixth semester.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">A major program is complete when a student has successfully completed a minimum of 42 hours of credit in History (14 courses) of which a minimum of 9 hours (3 courses) must be at the 3000 level, and 9 hours (3 courses) must be at the 4000 level. Majors must complete courses totalling 6 semester hours of credit at the 2000-4000 levels in one of the following areas of study: Europe, Britain, the USA, and Global.&nbsp; <strong lang=\"en-CA\">(<b><span>NOTE: As per Academic Regulation #1 h), all undergraduate degree programs require successful completion of IKE-1040, one of UPEI-1010, 1020 or 1030, and a Writing Intensive Course.)&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/span><\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\"><strong lang=\"en-CA\" xml:lang=\"en-CA\">HONOURS PROGRAM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"import-Normal no-indent\">To be admitted to the Honours program, the student must submit a letter of application to the Honours Coordinator. Applicants must be registered in, or have completed, the major program. Applications are normally submitted during the fourth or fifth semester. Decisions on admission are made by the department acting as a committee of the whole. Admissions decisions will be made on the basis of demonstrated and potential ability to carry out independent research and sustained historical analysis. Meeting the minimum entry requirements does not guarantee admission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-MediumList1-Accent61 no-indent\">Applicants normally must have a CGPA of 3.0 in all previous University courses. Normally, the Department expects an average of at least 80% in all previous history courses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-MediumList1-Accent61 no-indent\">In addition to the courses required for the major, honours students are required to complete History 4970 and 4980.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-MediumList1-Accent61 no-indent\">Each honours student must prepare a graduating honours essay under the direction of a supervisor. This essay will be evaluated by a three-person committee, two members from within the Department and one member of which will be from outside the Department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-MediumList1-Accent61 no-indent\">The candidate must take a final oral examination on the essay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"import-MediumList1-Accent61 no-indent\">Students intending to enter graduate programs should be aware that many such programs require a reading knowledge of a second language. The Malleus is a crucial text, for it helped spread the \u201celaborated theory of witchcraft\u201d which argued that witches made a formal alliance with the devil to work maleficent magic. Yet for all of its influence on the witch hunts of the sixteenth and seventeenth century, the Malleus is a very poorly argued book, full of contradictions. Students should consult with the honours advisor in planning this course. The course normally centres on the historiography of the broad area in which the student\u2019s graduating essay is prepared.<br \/>\nTutorial: Three hours a week<\/p>\n<p class=\"no-indent\">4980 HONOURS GRADUATING ESSAY<br \/>\nStudents propose, research, and write a major research essay under the supervision of a tutor from the Department. The essay is the subject of a final oral examination.
